3-DAY INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON "The Contributing Role of the Civil Society in the European Integration Process of Serbia"
Part of the Project: "Serbia on the Way to the EU" This project was made possible with the kind donation from the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Belgrade
The Accession to the European Union (EU) is one of the foremost priorities of Serbia's foreign policy. In order to achieve this goal, not only the political elites and state institutions, but the entire society itself must actively engage in its fulfilment. The purpose of this Conference is to open, encourage and bolster a constructive public debate on the issues of the active role and contribution that the civil society can and should play in the process of European Integration of Serbia. The conference is organized in three non-consecutive days to correspond to the three areas of the civil society that have been selected as the points of focus for the conference: the Media, the Non-governmental organizations and the Churches. In our humble opinion, their role and practical significance in the process of approaching the EU needs to be both thoroughly discussed and supported with concrete references to practical improvements that could be made in the coming years. The conferences will take place starting in:
  • Belgrade, on 20 June 2007 (the Role of the Media), continuing in
  • Niš, on 21 June 2007 (the Role of the NGO's), and, finally, concluding in
  • Novi Sad, on 25 June 2007 (the Role of the Churches).

The Conference is envisaged as an open forum in which significant stakeholders and experts in the areas discussed at the conferences will be invited to take an active part. We expect both participants and speakers from the media, the NGO community, the religious communities, independent intellectuals, academia, think-tanks, to Government and state institutions. Our intention is to provide an open and constructive environment for the exchange of ideas, opinions and concrete proposals on European Integrations and the content, manner and pace at which Serbia should be approaching them. We hope to achieve, as a final result, a threefold goal:

  • To inform and influence the main decision-makers in the country,
  • To reach out to, inform and influence the wider public in Serbia, whose opinion, at present, appears alarmingly fragmented due to insufficient information and an absence of a sustained constructive motivation by the country's political elites,
  • By moving the debate from the capital to other regions of Serbia, to engage and include the public and the civil society players throughout the country in debating and elaborating on the essential questions for Serbia's European future.

The ISAC Fund is organizing the Conference in close co-operation with NUNS - Nezavisno udruženje novinara Srbije, the Media Centre, the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, the Fridrich Ebert Stiftung, the Heinrich Bцll Stiftung, and its partner NGOs the Milenijum and the Committee for Civic Initiative, from Niš. The ISAC Fund expresses its sincere gratitude for the financial and other constructive support, received for this project from the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany.
